His Excellency Dr. Khalid bin Abdulmohsen Al-Mehaisen, President of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, and member of the newly established anti-corruption committee set up by Royal Order on November 4, issued the following statement on Monday:
“The evidence of transgressions and financial mismanagement uncovered recently points to widespread corruption in a number of cases. The responsibility of the new anti-corruption committee is to ensure that investigations into those cases are completed, and that the full force of the law is applied.
The suspects currently under questioning were detected due to the extraordinary work of the Saudi anti-corruption authorities who have the responsibility to monitor and uncover suspicious activities. They have worked painstakingly for three years to investigate the crimes in question and expose their perpetrators, a very difficult task when it involves influential officials and senior executives.
As a result of those efforts, the anti-corruption committee will continue to investigate corruption cases, identify the culprits, issue arrest warrants and travel restrictions and bring offenders to justice.
The committee has the authority to reveal the bank details of the accused, freeze their assets and funds, and take other appropriate measures. However, it will ensure that no wrongdoer is able to escape punishment, regardless of their position and status, while at the same time doing everything to protect the innocent.
As the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has stated clearly, no one is above the law, and no one who is proven to have indulged in corruption will escape, not even a prince or a minister.
The work of the anti-corruption committee will play a vital role in helping Saudi Arabia to realise its dream of a happy and prosperous society. This will only be possible when we completely weed out the cancer of corruption, which is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to progress.
The government of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of King Salman, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is working within a clear legal and institutional framework to maintain transparency and integrity in the market. Nothing can prevent us from fighting corruption and establishing a fair society with a level playing field for all of our people.
That said, the fight against corruption is not the responsibility of one organization. It is the duty of every citizen who dreams of a better tomorrow to participate in this patriotic duty. It’s a battle that can be won if we fight it together.”
