RIYADH, December 12 (CIC) – Domestic workers in Saudi Arabia will now get prepaid payroll or salary cards to protect their wages and ensure that they get their salaries on time, the Ministry of Labor and Social Development has announced this week.
The prepaid cards, which facilitate the monthly salary transfer for domestic workers such as housemaids and drivers electronically, will ensure timely payment of wages, ministry spokesman Khaled Aba Al-Khail was quoted as saying by the official Saudi Press Agency.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Development started this scheme earlier this week. It has given a six-month deadline to all employers to issue these cards to domestic workers under their sponsorship.
Aba Al-Khail said employers should provide prepaid salary cards to domestic workers the moment they arrive in the Kingdom.
The debit-card like option empowers household workers to handle their cash in a safe and secure manner with multiple access options and peace of mind.
The ministry spokesman called on all recruitment companies to educate their clients about the rights and obligations of the contractual relationship with the domestic workers and to educate the latter about their rights and obligations.
