The Command of the Joint Forces of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen: Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercept two ballistic missiles launched by the Iran-backed Houthi militias towards Riyadh
RIYADH, June 24, 2018 – The spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Colonel Turki Almalki, said Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militias from the city of Saada, Yemen, towards the Kingdom, at 20:31 local time on Sunday.
Col Almalki said the missiles were headed towards Riyadh, and were intentionally launched to target densely-populated civilian areas.
“Saudi Royal Air Defence Forces intercepted and destroyed the missiles. Some of the debris of the intercepted missiles landed on residential areas, thankfully without causing any casualties,” Col Almalki said.
Col Almalki added that this aggressive act yet again proves the continued involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting Houthis with heavy military capability, in clear defiance of UN Security Council resolutions 2216 and 2231.
The spokesperson also stressed that launching ballistic missiles towards civilian targets is in clear violation of the International Humanitarian Law and poses a major threat to international security.
